What is Gwei?

A denomination of Ether (ETH) commonly used to measure gas prices, equal to 1,000,000,000 Wei or 0.000000001 ETH.

Detailed Definition & Context

Gwei stands for Giga-wei. Because 1 ETH is 10^18 Wei, gas prices are naturally expressed in Gwei (10^9 Wei) for human readability. Under EIP-1559, base fee and priority tips are quoted in Gwei per unit of gas.

Practical Example

If the base fee is 20 Gwei and a standard transfer takes 21,000 gas, the cost is 420,000 Gwei (0.00042 ETH).
