Inside Solana's Architecture: Proof of History, Sealevel, and Micro-Fees
Explore how Solana achieves sub-second finality and thousandths-of-a-cent fees using Proof of History and parallel transaction processing.
Deep architectural look into Solana's verifiable delay functions, pipelining, local fee markets, and deterministic 5,000 lamport base fees.
1. Proof of History: A Decentralized Clock
Traditional blockchains require nodes to talk back and forth to agree on the time and order of transactions. Solana solved this communication bottleneck with Proof of History (PoH): a cryptographic clock built with a sequential SHA-256 Verifiable Delay Function.
Because every node can cryptographically verify the passage of time without message passing, Solana achieves 400 millisecond slot times and global horizontal scaling.
