Blockchain Technology Explained: Distributed Ledgers, Cryptography, and Blocks
Learn how cryptographic hash chains, Merkle trees, and consensus mechanisms create tamper-resistant distributed ledgers.
Demystify blockchain technology through practical examples of cryptographic hashing, block headers, Merkle roots, and immutable state updates.
1. Blocks and Cryptographic Hash Linking
A blockchain is a chain of structured data blocks connected sequentially through cryptographic hash pointers. Every block header contains the SHA-256 hash of the immediately preceding block header.
Because any microscopic alteration of historical block data drastically changes its resulting hash (the avalanche effect), altering past transactions requires rewriting that block and every subsequent block in history against the total network hash rate.
