Executive Summary

Clear, mathematical breakdown of EIP-1559 gas mechanics: base fee per gas, priority fee tips, gas limits, and how fee burning protects ETH monetary policy.

1. The EIP-1559 Fee Equation

Prior to Ethereum's London Hard Fork (EIP-1559) in August 2021, Ethereum used a legacy first-price auction where users blindly guessed gas prices. EIP-1559 replaced this with an algorithmic Base Fee plus an optional Priority Fee (Tip).

The total fee paid is calculated as: Total Fee = Gas Used * (Base Fee + Priority Fee). The Base Fee is completely burned (destroyed), reducing ETH circulating supply, while the Priority Fee goes to block validators as an incentive.

A simple ETH transfer always consumes exactly 21,000 gas units. Complex smart contract interactions like Uniswap v3 swaps consume between 120,000 and 180,000 gas units.
